Expats Buy Japanese Country House For A Song And Get Way More Than They Bargained For ?CNN

One of the things many of us are probably thinking about more often than not these days. is the idea of Getting Away From It All ?and maybe not just by taking a few days out of town for some well-deserved R&R, I mean really getting away from it all. Via CNN, I invite you all to check out a story about an American couple living in Japan, who decided to find a country home for themselves away from the urban sprawl of Tokyo, where both were working as teachers in international schools. While in general real-estate prices in Japan are quite high, a country kominka ?the term for a traditional, wood-frame Japanese home with sliding shoji screens ?can be had for almost shockingly low prices. If you're willing to work with some of the idiosyncrasies of such a house (they can be very cold in winter, for example) and you're not averse to a fixer-upper, you can make a home for yourself of unsurpassed spaciousness, grace, and beauty. Check out the story for one of the worst cases of home envy you'll ever have.

7 Brain-Boosting Beverages to Sip on Foggy Mornings (Besides Coffee) ?Real Simple

As long as I can remember, I always watched my dad make the best pancake batter in the world (to me, at least) every Saturday. But before my dad started, he always enjoyed a nice black cup of coffee made from his french press. I know every morning I need a chai tea latte, and thankfully, before #WFH hit us all, my train station served a small chai tea latte for just the right price. Have you ever thought about what you drink every morning and how it affects you throughout the day? If you want more insight on some brain-boosting beverages that can help your work from home flow, or even if you're getting used to working in the office again, try reading this piece from Real Simple.

Isaac Asimov's Throwback Vision of the Future ?The Atlantic

The first time I read Foundation by Isaac Asimov, I immediately closed the book, re-opened it, and started again. The intricacies of the plot and ideas demanded a second reading. The Atlantic wrote up a piece on Asimov earlier this year ?marking 100 years since the author's birth ?examining his vision of the future as set forth in his writing. He effectively invented the term "robotics" in his I, Robot series, and the complexities of his theory of "psychohistory," which serves as the backbone to the Foundation stories, is an allegorical look at the growth and decay of modern society. His books may well have been fiction ?and science fiction at that ?but there is certainly a lot we can learn from them. If nothing else, they are immensely entertaining.

Quotes And Portraits - Nitch.com

Ever since I was probably seven years old, Bruce Lee has been my hero. He had an electrifying screen presence and charisma, but it was his teachings and philosophies that made me start a book of quotes in my young, impressionable teenage years. The pages of my book filled up with words from all kinds of people, serving as a handy source of inspiration and a moral compass to my life. With the nitch.com website, you get the same thing ?regularly updated quotes, also accompanied by wonderful portraits. I keep it bookmarked as a quick way to calibrate the direction of my day, and I simply wanted to share this resource. As Bruce Lee would say, "Absorb what is useful, discard what is useless, and add what is specifically your own."

125 Black-Owned Businesses to Support ?The Strategist, New York Magazine

Like many, I have been particularly focused on anti-racism over the last couple of weeks and how I can help ensure that this movement and this work continues. And like me, you may be wondering what you can do beyond awareness. One of the most direct ways to introduce ongoing support of the Black community is by shopping at Black-owned businesses. The editors at The Strategist have put together this helpful directory, organizing recommendations across seven categories, including clothing, food and drink, home decor, bookstores, and more. This list isn't exhaustive, but it's a fantastic place to start.
